DANT formed as a “task force” in response to serious problems we noticed around the formation of NYC’s first-ever cultural plan, called CreateNYC. The cultural plan is a comprehensive and long-term guide for the arts & culture of the city, especially the priorities for the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA), the largest municipal funder of arts and culture in the U.S. DANT spent months working with the DCLA, organizing the disability arts community to have a strong presence during the public engagement period, and making recommendations for the plan itself.

DANT had a strong influence on CreateNYC. Our impact can be seen, for instance, in broadened definitions of diversity within the document, the incorporation of disability as a category of interest for the city, and specifically in the listing of EQUITY AND INCLUSION: STRATEGIES on page 79.
